Change is Good

I love change. I crave it. I'm ready for spring, summer, anything but winter. I want to go on a road trip. I would LOVE to go all by myself...but do I have to end up somewhere? Can't I just drive and drive, stop when I want to stop, go when and where I want to go. I love being disconnected from the world and everyone in it. Don't get me wrong, I adore my family. Sometimes I still crave alone time though. All growing up, with 8 brothers and sisters and 2 very prying and paranoid parents, I never spent much time alone. I took every opportunity I could to find a quiet spot away from everyone to just....do nothing. I think this is why I don't want a cell phone. I don't like the idea of somebody always knowing where I am and what I'm doing. I don't like feeling like I have to answer or return calls. I'll take the risk of needing one and not having it...I haven't encountered that in my 29 years so far. I'm just fine to walk down the road if I need help. I'm not afraid of changing a tire (I'd feel pretty stupid calling my husband to come change it for me anyway). I think that most of us reach for the phone to call someone else any time we encounter a problem. Is that just making our lives easier or is it making us less and less capable of solving even the smallest issues by ourselves? What will we do when our phone is out of range or the battery dies? Will that alone prevent us from say...going on a hike, a drive, or taking time for ourselves when we want or need to?

Sometimes I see people become a completely dependent individual when they get married. I guess if you are with someone 24/7 it's easy to depend on them for everything. We tend to lose ourselves I think. I love that my husband is a different person from me. Of course we have found things that we have in common and find new things that we both love, but he hasn't changed who he is on account of who I am. We knew who we were before we met(although we have grown up a lot since then!) and that's who we fell in love with. The he and I who exsisted before we met still exsist. I love that he has hobbies, relationships, inside jokes, and a personality that I am no part of. I love that he and I have different friends, and some of the same. After all, we are different people and need and want different things from a friendship. I love that he doesn't need me to tell him my opinion on something before deciding how he feels about it himself. I love that every day we get to have real discussions. Just as if it were on a first date. We ask and listen and learn things about each other that we could not assume to know. There was a time when I wondered what we would do when we are 80 and still had nothing in common. I laugh at that now because it makes me so excited to get to know him all over again with every passing day. How could we ever get bored? I love that we are both passionate...about different things. I love how he supports and encourages mine without pretending that it's a passion or even interest of his own. I try my best to do the same for him. I love, love, love this man. I love that he knows who I am and loves me anyway. I love that he doesn't require or expect anything from me in order to gain or keep his love. I love who he is with me and all we have together, but most of all I love him for who he is independently of me. This month we will celebrate our 9th anniversary. We've had lots of fun, but as I see with every new day that comes our way, the best is always yet to come!
